Research On Visualization Of Data Journalism

With the fast development of the Internet,accumulation of big data and the progress made in cloud computing,data have embraced journalism,leading to a boom of data journalism.As a new way of reporting,data journalism has brought many changes to news production,presentation and communication.And visualization has created a new way of reporting,adding vitality to news.As a pioneer practicing data journalism in China,Caixin is a role model.Producing high-quality data news,it has received recognition both from home and abroad,which provides a lot for us to learn.So how is visualization applied in Caxin data news?What are the characteristics and strengths?These are the major questions discussed in this thesis.Based on the theory of Visual Communication and Double Coding,this thesis discusses characteristics,strengths as well as weak points of visualization used in Interactive 2017,Caixin Data News Collection through literature review,case study,comparison and content analysis.First,the concept of data journalism and news visualization are elaborated and then the development of visualization of data journalism is clarified.Secondly,this thesis gives a brief introduction of Caixin in terms of data sources,data journalism teams,some visualization software and the flow of data news production,followed by a content analysis and a text analysis of visualization on Interactive 2017.Caixin Data News Collection,which becomes the third part.In this part,Caixin's advantages on visualization and interactivity will be further analyzed based on typical cases from home and abroad together with a critical thinking of visualization in data journalism.Last but not least,based on an official news report from Xinhua Net about the current situation of journalism in China,the future trend of data journalism is discussed.It is found that Caixin data news covers a wide range of issues with emphasis on economy and people's livelihoods,that it has various data sources in which the government organs and traditional media play a major role and that it has many ways of presentation,featuring the use of dynamic elements and interactivity.Its interactivity lies in the fact that users can not only choose the module they want to see in the news but also get individual feedbacks based on the information they input as well as experience the news in the form of games.No apparent difference has been found in terms of Caixin data news on the computer and on the mobile app,which proves the reuse of data news resources in an era of media convergence.Though adept in visualization and interactivity,Caixin has produced some data news with misplaced emphasis on form instead of content.Media staff should be aware that data news ought to be user-oriented and visualization is to serve the storytelling.With the accumulation of big data,the development and application of AI and VR,data journalism will have broad room to develop.
