With the fast development of the Internet technology, new applications arose rapidly nowadays, driving more and moredemand on the quality of service. The long convergence time of the wide-area routing protocols when facing failures would decrease the performance of end-to-end application dramatically.Overlay network technology is one of the most promising solutions in this area.Without changing the network layer infrastructure,In this paper, the existing overlay network routing techniques were reviewed and analyzed in depth. The source code of RON(the Resilient Overlay Network)has also been analyzed for reference.Among the classical solutions,RON is limited in scalability due to its probing and controlling overhead.One-hop routing is short in stability for its random routing request.in this paper a scalible and reliable application-layer routing protocol called Application-Layer Communicaiton Assistant(ALCA)was proposed to recover data path from network failures within several seconds.the prototype of ALCA has been tested both in experimental network running OSPF and in the PlanetLab testbed. The test results show that even in intercontinential environment ALCA could also achive excellent performance. The main contents of this paper are as followed:(1)Existing overlay network routing technology and the source code of RON were studied and analyzed in depth.(2)A new application-layer routing protocol-ALCAwas proposed which could create and maintain the application-layer route.(3)the function and performance of ALCA was tested both in the local area network running OSPF and in the PlanetLab testbed.
