Chinese language teaching in foreign countries is developing very fast,more and more schools in UK have established mandarin course.But there are still some problems.Some schools that have mandarin course do not use textbooks or a teaching outline,it is difficult for mandarin teachers to decide the teaching content,mandarin teaching is not so systematic.Besides,the teaching hour is not many,some mandarin teachers value word teaching,students can say some mandarin words but rarely speak mandarin sentences.This paper explores thematic teaching for children based on mandarin core words,it aims to sort out mandairn core words that are suitable for children by comparing 300 basic mandrin characters in Chinese course standards,Dolch English core words and corpus of mandarin children's books.Based on mandarin core words,this paper selects some themes close to children's life and design 20 theme teaching cases,including number,family,school,food and drink,park and so on,which aim to provide reference for overseas mandarin teaching for children.This study is based on a public primary school in London,it analyses the feasibility of thematic teaching according to the teaching situation,the characteristics of students and cultural features of UK.As for teaching practice,this study selects some themes to teach the students of year 5.The teaching content is based on the themes.In the process of teaching mandarin core words,the training of students' ability to speak sentences is highly valued.Teaching content about culture is also arranged to help students understand Chinese culture and the culture difference between China and UK.With teaching evaluation,student interview and questionnaire,this paper draws the conclusion that students have high acceptance of thematic teaching,thematic teaching can help students to learn words and improve their ability to speak sentences.At the end this paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of thematic teaching and gives some advice.The research methods that this paper uses are literature research,practical observation,interview and questionnaire.This study uses mandarin core words as the basis of thematic teaching.The meaning of core words is to provide a vocabulary outline for mandarin lesson and a reference for mandarin teachers when they decide what to teach.For the learners,studying the core words helps them to lay the foundation for language learning and improve efficiency of learning.This studyprovides a new perspective for the research of thematic teaching and digs into research space for thematic teaching,which aims to provide teaching reference for mandarin teachers in UK and enrich research results of Chinese language teaching for children.
