The requirements for literacy-oriented teaching design in the new National Chemistry Curriculum Standards for General High School are to create a real teaching situation that is problem-oriented and experiment-based,and to lay emphasis on systematic and structured knowledge to explore thematic and project-based teaching, advocating the integration of "teaching, learning, and evaluation",so as to achieve the development of the core literacy of students.STEAM is an educational concept which is based on multi-disciplinary knowledge of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to solve practical problems.STEAM is highly compatible with thematic teaching and core literacy, carrying out thematic teaching based on STEAM concept provides an effective educational way for cultivating students' core literacy, improving students' capacity of solving complicated practical problems, and improving students' knowledge transfer and application ability.Exploring the joint point between STEAM concept and thematic teaching, and applying it into general teaching is the core issue of this research. In the research,I mainly focus on the following three questions:(1)What is the theoretical support for thematic teaching based on STEAM concept?(2)How to integrate STEAM concept with thematic teaching design for "Nitrogen and Its Compounds" ?(3)What are the practical effects of the teaching design? In the research,I mainly analyze the current teaching status quo of STEAM concept and thematic teaching. It also conducts related theoretical discussion of STEAM concept and thematic teaching.Besides,it defines the connotation and elements of thematic teaching design based on STEAM concept. As a consequence,a specific instructional design process model suitable for this research is designed.Through interviews and teaching needs of frontline chemistry teachers, the teaching design on “Nitrogen and Its Compound" from the textbook of High School Chemistry Compulsory 2(People's Education Press,2019 edition)based on STEAM concept is created. Then, the teaching design is implemented in a high school in Lanzhou city,Gansu Province. Finally, the designed teaching evaluation form, interviewing students after-class and questionnaire in the form of test paper are used for evaluating teaching effectiveness.Through analyzing the data of students' performance according to the teaching activity evaluation scale, student interviews and questionnaires, the research results show that when applying thematic teaching design on "Nitrogen and Its Compounds" based on STEAM concept to teach, students' academic performance is significantly higher than that of using traditional teaching method. In the teaching activities, students' autonomy in learning, ability to solve practical problems, and innovation ability have been improved. In addition, the construction of knowledge system of students becomes more comprehensive and systematic. It proves that the integration of the thematic teaching design with the STEAM concept has positive effect on improving students' academic performance and developing students' literacy. The thematic teaching design on “Nitrogen and Its Compounds” based on the STEAM concept can help students improve their cognitive ability of classification, elemental, and transformational views. It also can help improve students' ability to use multidisciplinary knowledge to solve practical problems.Thirdly,it helps students construct a complete knowledge system and learning thoughts for studying elemental compounds knowledge. Finally,it enables to improve students' capacity of solving practical problems and their innovation ability. Therefore,if thematic teaching incorporating STEAM concept can be persisted for a long time in teaching practice,it will be in favor of developing students' core literacy and cultivating students' awareness of applying multidisciplinary knowledge to solve practical problems in life.
