Private education is a complementary activity of the mainstream education system, and there are inextricable links with mainstream education. In today's society, extracurricular tutoring has become a hot topic, and it has always touched the nerves of countless students, parents and teachers.Extracurricular tutoring occupies most of the students' spare time, and the question of whether the extracurricular tutoring that everyone cares about can really improve the academic performance of the students is not consistent. Therefore, this paper aims to answer the above questions through an empirical analysis of extracurricular tutoring and academic achievement. This paper uses the 2016 China Family Panel Studies Data(CFPS2016)to select junior high school students in the compulsory education stage as the research object, and analyzes the current situation of junior high school students participating in extracurricular tutoring in China, and based on the analysis and analysis of the survey data, from individuals and families. At the school level,an empirical study was conducted on the relationship between extracurricular tutoring and student achievement. This paper firstly uses the ordered logistic regression to explore the influence of extracurricular tutoring on students' academic performance and obtain a benchmark model.Secondly,in order to correct the selectivity bias of the sample, this paper uses the propensity score matching method to further explore the relationship between extracurricular tutoring and academic achievement from the direction of causal inference. The results of the study showed that more than half of the junior high school students in the survey sample participated in extracurricular supplements(55.7%),and the trend of extracurricular tutoring was still prevalent among junior high school students;Using empirical analysis to explore the relationship between extracurricular tutoring and students' academic performance,it is found that taking extracurricular tutoring can significantly improve the class ranking of junior high school students. At the same time, the lowest class of students in the class has the highest proportion of tutoring, followed by the class with the highest class.Extracurricular tutoring has the dual functions of “cultivating excellent” and “compensating for the difference”;Out-of-school tutoring expenditures of key school students are significantly higher than those of non-key schools;junior high school students with hukou as towns and junior high school students in the eastern region, whether they are participating inextracurricular tutoring or extracurricular tutoring expenditures, are significantly higher than rural students;family economy The better the conditions, the higher the extracurricular tutoring expenditure and the higher the class ranking;the students who have reading habits usually have higher class rankings than those who do not have reading habits;the higher the parents' educational expectations, the more extracurricular tutoring expenditures the students have. The higher the student's class rankings;at the same time, their own educational expectations will also significantly affect the student's class ranking. Finally, based on the theory of human capital, maximizing the maintenance of inequality, and effectively maintaining the theory of inequality, this paper makes a deep analysis of the above conclusions and makes reasonable suggestions to parents, schools and the government: parents should rationally treat extracurricular tutoring and carefully choose tutoring.Institutions;the government should correctly lead the direction of extracurricular tutoring and realize the role of truly supporting students' development;at the same time,it should narrow the gap of high-quality resources and provide subsidies to the disadvantaged classes;schools should improve the mainstream education system and promote the healthy growth of children.
