With the continuous development of overseas Chinese teaching,the number of people studying Chinese in the world is increasing day by day,but there is little research on the vocabulary of overseas Chinese textbooks for primary and Secondary Schools.In particular,there is a lack of systematic analysis and description of the repetition rate of new words in textbooks.Therefore,we select a set of Chinese textbooks called Learn Chinese with Me?????(volume 1-4)to do the research,which are specially compiled for overseas middle school students to study.Firstly,we describe the general situation of the new words in the textbooks,including the total number of new words,the number of new words in every single text and the degree of difficulty of the new words.Then,the average repetition rate,the distribution of repetition levels,the most frequently used words and the new words with the same repetition times are counted to investigate whether the overall repetition of new words in the whole set of textbooks is scientific.Next,we counts the repetition rate and interval of the new words in the text,and the repetition rate in the mechanical exercise,understanding exercise and communicative exercise.Lastly,we analyzes the reasons for the low repetition rate of the third and fourth volumes of new words in the text and the low repetition rate of the new words in each volume in the three kinds of exercises At the same time,we discussed whether the arrangement in the exercise accords with the characteristics of the Chinese learners in the primary stage.The conclusions are as follows:1.The total number of new words is reasonable,which is in line with the overseas middle school Chinese teaching vocabulary demand.2.The difficulty level of new words in the whole set of textbooks is well controlled,and the proportion of popularized words in high repetition words is high,which ensures the common use of vocabulary.3.There are no zero repetition words in the full set of textbooks,and the repetition rate of new words in one to three volumes is above six times.Moreover,the distribution of repetition is reasonable,and almost half of the words have high repetition.But because of the high level of difficulty of new words and the large number of words in the text,the repetition rate in volume 4 is a little low,and the distribution of the repetition level is not very ideal.4.The text is an important position for the reproduction of new words in this set of textbooks.The proportion of new words in the text accounts for more than half of the total repetition rate,but most of the new words can't be reproduced within the optimal repetition interval.5.The repetition rate of new words in the three exercises is low,and there is no mechanical exercise at all in books 3 and 4.According to the above conclusions,we put forward specific suggestions on how to improve the repetition of new words in Chinese textbooks for overseas secondary students and Chinese teachers who use these textbooks.For example,when compiling a textbook,the writer should properly control the quantity and the difficulty level of new words,and make full use of each section of the textbook to increase the repetition rate of new words.For the overseas secondary teachers,we should balance the number of new words in every single class,pay attention to the opportunity of reappearing new words by considering the arrangement of courses,and increase or decrease exercises according to the materials provided in the textbook.At the same time,we should attach importance to way of reappearing new words and strengthen the prominence of new words.We hoped that this paper can to a certain extent provide theoretical support and data supplement for the study of the problem of repetition of new words in Chinese textbooks for overseas secondary students,and further promote the compilation of overseas Chinese textbooks for overseas Secondary students.We also hope it can provide some ideas for the users to improve the repetition of new words in the course of teaching,and help students to acquire Chinese vocabulary better.
