Generic Structure Guided Anticipation In Business Interpreting

Anticipation is a very important strategy in interpreting because interpreters can gain more time for themselves,reduce their stress and finally improve the quality of interpretation by anticipating the coming information actively based on their language proficiency and background knowledge.This report analyzes how non-linguistic anticipation,namely anticipation based on background information and anticipation based on non-verbal behavior,affects the interpreter's performance in the 19 th “Go for Israel” Investment Convention.The author summarizes four obligatory generic elements,namely Greetings,Card Exchange,Company Introduction and Farewell,and three optional generic elements,namely Self Introduction,Product Introduction and Cooperation Consultation,out of the interpreted business negotiation based on generic structure potential theory and further analyzes how non-linguistic anticipation affects the interpreter's performance in each generic element and the interpreter's coping strategy.The author finds that anticipation based on background information greatly affects the interpreter's performance in the element of Greetings,Self Introduction,Company Introduction,Product Introduction and Cooperation Consultation while anticipation based on non-verbal behavior betters the interpreter's performance in the element of Card Exchange and Farewell.It is hoped that this report can help student make clear the whole process of business negotiation and do better in anticipation of business negotiation interpreting.This report is far from being perfect because it is based on one interpreting practice of the author which might not cover all the situations in business negotiation.
