The thesis explores anticipation as one of the most widely used strategies in SIfrom Chinese to English in a tentative attempt to explain and prove the significance ofanticipation in SI from Chinese to English and how anticipation is employed in SI as astrategy.The thesis has established a theoretical framework based on Daniel Gile s EffortModel, Chernov s probability Prediction Model and the Theory of Schema to explainand prove the significance of anticipation in SI from Chinese to English.On the basis of the theoretical framework, the author has carried out anexperimental study where four subjects who have completed a year s training on SIwere asked to interpret President Hu Jintao s speech at the Fifth MinisterialConference of the China-Africa Forum (FOCAC). The author conducts a detailedproduction analysis of the recordings of the subjects based on transcript analysis andinterviews with subjects after the experiment.With the experiment and data analysis, the author ventures to explore thepossibility and significance of anticipation in SI from Chinese to English in order tofind out how anticipation affects the quality of interpreting and identify theanticipated constituents. The present study on anticipation in SI from Chinese toEnglish is a tentative attempt to provide some suggestions on how to improve thequality of interpreting with anticipation.
