This report is written based on the translator's translation of the first part of the book The Future of International Courts: Regional,Institutional and Procedural Challenges, which is co-edited by Avidan Kent,Nikos Skoutaris and Jamie Trinidad. In accordance with Newmark's text typology theory, the source text is categorized into the informative text.In order to correctly deliver the information contained in the informative text, the translator chooses communicative translation theory to deal with difficulties caused by the differences between Chinese and English from lexical, syntactic and textual perspectives. At lexical level, this translation report focuses on dealing with terms and common words with special legal meanings. When translating these words, the translator should first of all refer the dictionary or internet resources to find out the established expressions and combine the context to achieve the real equivalence of the meaning. At syntactic level, reversion, division and rearrangement are employed in translating nominalization structures and long sentences. At textual level, repetition and adding logical connectives are applied to achieve textual coherence.Through this translation practice, the translator finds that communicative translation can guide her to transcend the differences in language forms, and then produce a translation work that can not only correctly deliver the information, but also to conform the norms of the target language. In view that these difficulties are common and representative, this report is expected to give some guidance for future researchers who are interested in studying scholarly legal translation.
