Globalization has enabled the translation industry in China to develop rapidly.Practical writing in particular dominates the current translation market. As part of pragmatic translation, academic translation has a large number of target audiences, for example academics and researchers.Since the performance of academic translation may greatly affect the communication between scholars in the academic world, the exploration into academic translation is of both practical and theoretical significance.Despite the fact that academic translation is gaining its momentum, domestic scholars pay relatively less attention to academic translation.Furthermore, the existing research papers on this topic seem to take a rather unilateral approach, focusing mainly on terminological translation and other micro levels. Therefore, this report tends to investigate academic translation more systematically and comprehensively, aiming to provide insights into the understanding of academic translation. The report is based on a translation task of two accounting papers regarding earnings management and financial reporting.By reviewing the translation process and conducting a case study of the translated texts through three dimensions, that is lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level, the report intends to discuss certain specifications that are important in academic translation.Previous studies on academic translation provide reference for this report, and Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory renders guiding principles to this report. In this report,it can be concluded that 1)in light of the particularity of the source text’s genre, the stylistic features of academic papers call for a detailed analysis and a careful reproduction, especially concerning precision and specialty of language, which can directly influence the quality of the target text;2)for an informative text which aims to deliver information and disseminate ideas, like the source text,it is natural that the version should be aimed at the readers of the target text, catering to the audiences’ reading habits, thus accomplishing the purpose of academic exchange. It can be argued that in addition to faithfulness, readability also matters in the translation of academic papers;3)it is noteworthy that context should always be taken into account in the text analysis.Any tendency that deviates from it may cause revision or misunderstanding.
