A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Steinhoff And Self-Defense From The Perspective Of Semantic Translation

With the further development of globalization,the exchanges between countries have become increasingly frequent.Legal academic exchanges also have witnessed constant expansions,scholars and practitioners across the world have been learning legal theories and norms from other countries.Therefore,the translation of legal academic papers has been a significant work for legal academic exchanges and studies,and the translation of legal academic papers involves rigorous legal attainments and calls for expertise.This practical report selects the translation of the paper Steinhoff and Self-Defense by Professor Michael S.Moore as the cases,and concludes the major difficulties and their corresponding translation skills during the process of translation under the guidance of Newmark's semantic translation.The author summarizes these difficulties from the lexical level: 1)terminologies,2)pronouns,and the syntactic level: 1)long and complex sentences,2)sentences with dashes,3)fixed sentence structures.The author should focus on the accuracy of the target text and should be faithful to the source text when translating legal academic papers,which is in line with the content of semantic translation.Hence,the author adopts six translation skills to deal with the difficulties above under the guidance of semantic translation,including 1)literal translation,2)conversion,3)repetition,4)linear translation,5)division and 6)slight adjustment of the word order.The author hopes to improve his translating skills and put forward implications for future studies by writing this translation practice report.Moreover,the author also hopes to contribute to the study of the translation of legal academic papers,provide a new perspective for its study and offer empirical material to the study of the semantic translation through this practice report.
