| This project is a short story named Invisible Injury from the second issue of Fiction Monthly in 2012.It tells a touching story about pains and sorrows between a father and his son.As a narrative essay, this essay uses many traditional Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions. Thus, how to convey the aesthetics in the source text and how to translate culture-loaded words become difficult problems in the translating process. The translated text should consider target readers’ acceptability and conform to their language habits so that the audience can accept it more easily. It is virtually impossible to translate it word by word, and therefore we need the translation strategies which bail out from the shackles of the original text.Chesterman’s translation norms and his pragmatic strategies provide potent means to address above issues. In order to achieve the desired outcome, the author adopts a variety of strategies to guide the process of translation.First of all,the author introduces Expectation Norms and Professional Norms in Chesterman translation norms, which are the preconditions for translation.Chesterman translation norms function as effective guidance for translating practice and translators, while the translation strategies under the framework of his norms are more specific to address translation difficulties. Therefore, the author draws on the text translation strategies on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic levels proposed by Chesterman.Among them, pragmatic strategy is more dynamic and requires translators to grasp the whole text. This paper lays emphasis on Cultural Filtering,Visibility Change,Change of Coherence and Change of Translators’ Visibility of pragmatic strategy.Cultural Filtering, which can be viewed as domestication, requires translators to abide by the culture and habits of the target language;Visibility Change means the translator adds or cuts out some words or paragraphs to make the translated text easy to understand;Change of Coherence means the translators need to adjust the word order and information of the target language to enhance the logic;“Change of Translators’ Visibility” refers to the rebellious translation to distinguish from the originals.Translators need to adopt corresponding strategies to achieve the desired effects, and try to give the translated text a relevant similarity of aesthetic value. |
