The Report On C-E Translation For International Publicity From The Perspective Of Chesterman’s Translation Norms Theory

As China has been growing stronger in national strength and becoming obviously open to the outside world,China’s discourse power gets much greater internationally and regionally.After President Xi Jinping put forward the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013,the intensive communication between China and other countries across the world is achieved.As an important medium in it,Chinese-English translation for international publicity(CETIP for short)is of great significance.When working in the English Department of Foreign Language Press as an intern,the author of this report participated in translating two chapters from the book The Chinese Path and The Chinese Schools:Interviews with Chinese Leading Academics.This book aimed to spread China’s voice and tell China’s stories to the whole world on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.In the 1990s,on the basis of Gideon Toury’s translation norms theory,Chesterman further illustrated the translation norms theory.Compared with Toury,he placed much more emphasis on targeted readers in his theory.The author translated the two chapters from the book The Chinese Path and The Chinese Schools under the guidance of his theory,after which the feasibility of adopting it to guide CETIP was confirmed.Chesterman’s translation norms include expectancy norms and professional norms.Of these norms,professional norms can be further divided into the accountability norm,the communication norm and the relation norm.During translation,the author adopted six translation strategies from syntactic,semantic and pragmatic perspectives,including transposition,unit shift,sentence structure change,abstraction change,annotation and amplification.Through research,the expectancy norms can be implemented with such strategies as transposition,unit shift and sentence structure change,which will lead to the satisfaction of foreign readers’expectations.As far as the communication norm is concerned,the author employs unit shift,sentence structure change,abstraction change and annotation to abide by it,which will probably result in the better understandings of foreign readers on the text.In terms of the accountability norm,amplification is used to show the importance of translators in cultural exchanges.The author expects to demonstrate the feasibility of applying Chesterman’s translation norms theory to guide CETIP and hopes that this report can give inspiration to the studies on CETIP in the future.
