Ethnography serves as a window to other cultures and its translation opens the window and connects different cultures.Encouraged by the Belt and Road Initiative, the 21 st century has witnessed the rapid growth of translation of culture-related works including ethnography.Migrant Conversions: Transforming Connections between Peru and South Korea by Erica Vogel is a social science work whose introduction summarizes the main information of the book, covering the monetary, religious, and cosmopolitan conversions and their interaction with Peruvian migrants. The translation difficulties that the translator encountered are the difficult words including anthropological terminology and religious words and the long sentences. The report explores how to handle the difficult words and the long sentences under the guidance of Chesterman’s expectancy norms.Based on previous studies,Chesterman’s expectancy norms can be further classified into: the norms which conform to authorized works and parallel texts of the similar text-type,the norms of the target language and culture, and norms for satisfying target readers’ mental needs.Under the above norms, the author of the report finds out that, while handling difficult words, borrowing plus paraphrasing can be used to handle Spanish words so as to fulfill readers’ mental needs;adaption can be employed to translate anthropological terminology so that the translated version is lined with authorized works and parallel texts of the similar text-type,and paraphrasing can be used in dealing with religious words to obey norms of the target language and culture. The author of the report also finds out that, while translating long sentences, addition can be adopted to supply necessary information and omission can be used to cut unnecessary and redundant information;reversion can be adopted to conform to target language order and recasting can be used to reconstruct the structure;explicitation can be used to reduce sentence length and implicitation can be adopted to leave space for inferring.Obeying expectancy norms makes the translation more acceptable. |
