The construction of high quality teachers is the basic guarantee to promote quality-oriented education since teachers' professional development affects the quality of education.Thus,it is of critical importance to know about the needs of teachers' professional development.Currently,there are not many studies concerning the needs of teachers' professional development.Such studies on professional development needs of high school English teachers based on the background of the English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary High Schools(2017 edition)are even less.This paper,by investigating the current situation of professional development needs of high schools English teachers in Shangrao city,aims to provide some constructive suggestions for designing professional development programs of high school English teachers in Shangrao city and other China's central and western regions.In this study,data were collected from the questionnaires of 210 high school English teachers in Shangrao city.By analyzing the survey results,the study shows the professional development needs of high school English teachers in this region.The details are as follows: In terms of professional knowledge,high school English teachers in this region are in urgent need of knowledge of Anglo-American cultural background.In addition,English teachers have shown great interest in improving their ability to use modern educational technology in English teaching,cultivating and stimulating students' learning motivation and understanding the psychological characteristics of students with learning difficulties.In terms of professional ability,how to improve the ability of transforming students with learning difficulties and how to improve the ability of immediate evaluation and feedback on students in classroom teaching are the focuses of high school English teachers.Besides,how to improve self-learning ability,teaching reflective ability and research ability on English teaching are also what English teachers want to improve.According to the survey results,school support is very crucial to theprofessional development of teachers.However,the data also shows that high school English teachers are not clear about the suitable ways for their own professional development,so English teachers need to actively explore the appropriate ways for their own development based on their own situation.
