English is a compulsory course in senior high school and also a compulsory subject in the college entrance examination. With the development of globalization,English has become an important standard to measure whether students meet the requirement of comprehensive quality talents and all-round development, there is no doubt that it is important.Through the investigation of the present English learning situation among the students in Zhangjiakou No.1 Senior Middle School,it is discovered that there are some problems in students’ English learning at present: weak in foundation, inactive in learning motivation, unenthusiastic in learning English and so on.Meeting these needs and improving students’ English learning needs would affect their English learning achievements and learning results. The study is based on the needs analysis theory.Questionnaire, interview and observation are used to study the students’ learning needs, the purpose is to know students’ specific needs and find some measures to satisfy these needs. The questionnaire is based on the needs analysis model of Hutchinson&Waters and Dudley-Evans&S.t John, combined with the analysis models of Di Gege(2013)and Zhang Wenli(2017),and the questionnaire is design according to the actual situation of senior high school students. These questionnaires are handed out 402 students in different kinds of classes, including two ordinary classes, two experimental classes and two top classes.Structured interview is used in the study, six students and six teachers are interviewed.Observation is a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research, which is based on observation guidance of Chenyao(2002)and takes advice from experienced teachers, and the observation is design according to the real situation of senior high school students. The research is conducted revolving around the following specific questions: 1)What are the specific needs of the senior high school students when they learn English? 2)What are the gaps between the current English teaching situation and students’ English learning needs? 3)What measures do the education sectors, school and teachers take to meet students’ needs? The collected data are analyzed by SPSS software for more scientific analysis. The study shows that there are various learning needs in English, for example, the needs for using teaching materials, teachers’ teaching methods, curriculum arrangement, teaching environment and platform and test methods. It is obvious that there is a great gap between the students’ current level and expected level, and there is also a gap between the current teaching situation and the expected situation. Then the needs are compared with the requirement of the New Curriculum Standards(2017),the Syllabus and China’s Standards of English Language Ability. The research is done to see which needs are consistent with these standards and which ones are not,and according to the research results, some suggestions are made. For a few inconsistent needs, education sectors, school and teachers should actively try to guide students in the right direction. For lots of consistent needs, education sectors, school and teachers should strive to improve the current teaching situation to meet the learning needs. The final purpose is to improve students’ English level. It is necessary and urgent for the senior high school students to cut through the limitations and learn English well. After the comparison and analysis, some specific suggestions are made for education sectors, school and teachers from teaching materials, curriculum arrangement, teaching methods, teaching environment and platform and test methods.
