The proposal of "core competency" points out the direction for deepening the curriculum reform and implementing the goal of cultivating people with morality.According to the guidance on promoting the reform of cultivating students in ordinary high schools in the new era,issued by the General Office of the State Council in 2019,the test syllabus will be canceled,new courses and new textbooks will be implemented,and overall quality will be included in exam standards of College Entrance Examination before 2022.This reform will change the phenomenon of "only focusing on scores" in the field of education,and put the educational goal of "cultivating people with morality"into practice.As for English,Cultural character is the embodiment of the educational value.For students,reading is the main way to cultivate cultural character,obtain information and understand the world through English.However,at present,English reading teaching in senior high schools still focuses on the explanation of vocabulary,sentence patterns and grammar,but ignores the influence of culture.There is no specific assessment standard or corresponding test items for cultural character in the college entrance examination,and cultural teaching has been neglected by English teachers for a long time.Combined with the author's teaching practice,the author tries to study the effect of English reading teaching from the perspective of cultural character and focuses on the following research questions:(1)What is the current status of cultural character cultivation in high school English reading teaching?(2)How do English teachers cultivate students' cultural character in English reading teaching?(3)What is the effect of cultural character cultivation in English reading teaching?During the research process,this paper adopts such methodologies as sociocultural test,questionnaire,interviews,classroom observation and language tests.The results show that:(1)The cultural literacy of high school students is generally low.There are some problems in the teachers' understanding of the cultural character cultivation goals,the implementation in the classroom and the development of the reading class.(2)On this basis,the author summarizes several strategies of cultural teaching by gathering the wisdom and practical experience of many teachers.(3)By using these strategies in English reading teaching,the author proves that reading teaching based on the perspective of cultural character cultivation can improve students' performance in reading.This research proves that the effect of English reading teaching based on the perspective of cultural character is satisfactory.The authors hope the study can encourage English teachers to implement cultural teaching and continually improve the cultural teaching model in English teaching.In this way,the humanistic function of English will be fully reflected and comprehensive language skills will get improved,which can help students develop positive and healthy attitudes and shape wholesome personality.Some qualified people will be trained to meet the needs of the country in the international background.
