English reading teaching is the key to improve reading comprehension and cultivate the key competence of English.In regular teaching and training of English reading course,English teachers often pay much attention to the amount of reading of students,that is,the breadth of reading.They require students to be exposed to as many subjects and genres as possible,believing that this is a good strategy for improving reading ability and grades.However,research shows that the narrow reading strategy of reading articles or books of the same topic,the same genre,or written by one author in the short term can help students improve their reading level and increase their reading interest.This view has been around for a long time,first proposed by American scholar Krashen in the last century.Combining Firth’s three-dimensional levels of English reading comprehension and Yang Zhiming’s classification of English reading comprehension and other theoretical frameworks,this article would focus on the following three questions:(1)What is the impact of narrow reading teaching on the surface reading comprehension(recognition and extraction)of high school English?(2)What is the impact of narrow reading teaching on the deep reading comprehension(generalization and analysis)of high school English?(3)What is the impact of narrow reading teaching on the analytical reading comprehension(criticism and evaluation)of high school English?In order to solve these problems,this research would refer to the selection principles of Krashen and many scholars to select text materials suitable for this experiment,and combine the “China English Proficiency Rating Scale” to design narrow-type reading classroom activities for students’ specific ability requirements.A 16-week teaching experiment was conducted with students from two natural classes in a high school in Neijiang City,Sichuan Province as the experimental subjects.After data collection,SPSS software would be used for data statistics and analysis.The research results showed that narrow reading teaching could significantly improve high school students’ ability of surface reading comprehension(recognition,extraction),deep reading comprehension(generalization,analysis),and analytical reading comprehension(criticism,evaluation).Among them,the surface and deep reading comprehension of the experimental subjects improved faster,and the analytical reading comprehension improved relatively slowly.
