Based on the new curriculum concepts,English reading class requires teachers to guide students to read actively and explore independently,emphasizing the effective combination of teamwork and independent thinking and promoting meaning construction by questioning and discussing.The whole learning is a process of students’ independent participation,practice,exploration,cooperation,communication and sharing.The characteristics of KWL reading mode meet the requirements of English reading class under these new concepts,to a great extent,which can solve the problems in current junior English reading teaching.KWL reading mode was put forward in 1986 by Donna Ogle,an American scholar.In this reading mode,learners independently set up reading goals according to their original experience and learning needs as well as actively reflect on what they have learnt.It is divided into three stages—K(What I have known),W(What I want to know)and L(What I have learnt).Based on Constructivism theory and Metacognition theory,this study selects two natural classes with the same level in Grade Eight in the author’s school as the experimental class and the control class,with a total of 108 students as research subjects.It carries out an experimental study for one semester on reading teaching by using the KWL reading mode.The study uses tests,questionnaires and interviews as research instruments,with the aim of seeking answers to the following two research questions: 1)What effect does the application of KWL reading model have on students’ English reading scores? 2)What are the effects of KWL reading mode on students’ use of reading strategies in the reading process?Through the analysis of the test results,it is found that the students’ reading ability in the experimental class with KWL reading teaching mode is obviously higher than that in the control group,which proves that KWL reading teaching mode can improve students’ English reading ability.Through the analysis of the results of the questionnaire,it is found that students have a better grasp of common reading strategies and their abilities to use reading strategies have been improved.They are able to choose different reading strategies in the three stages of K-W-L and pay attention to the author’s writing skills,techniques and the language characteristics of the text,which helps them understand the deep meanings of the text better.Based on the research findings,this study provides some enlightenment for English reading teaching using KWL reading mode.Teachers should pay attention to the role transformation in the three stages of K-W-L,focus more on cultivating students’ ability to use reading strategies and questioning ability as well as use KWL reading mode flexibly according to the teaching time.This study is an experimental study.There are many shortcomings in the research process.The experimental process is short and the sample size is small,but it is hoped that this study can have some practical significance for English reading teaching in junior high school. |
