The current research aims to locate English linguistic problems that still exist in MTI textbooks.After putting forth the findings of this research,possible causes of and remedies to these linguistic errors will be discussed in detail.While practicing interpreting with these textbooks in a classroom setting,the present writer discovered discrepancies between the English used in these MTI textbooks and his own choice of words.It has been concluded that the current MTI textbooks used in many Chinese universities are in need of correcting and updating.Problems include a lack of distinction between interpretation and translation and English linguistic errors.The author of this thesis makes the distinction between a literary style of writing that is acceptable in written translations versus a practical style that is suitable to the job of an interpreter.Furthermore,the current research has located and discussed specific syntactic and semantic problems found in MTI textbooks including the use of outdated vocabulary and unnatural phrasing,the incorrect usage of articles and other syntactic errors,and the incorrect use of certain phrases and vocabulary.It is recommended to update these textbooks with input from native English speakers,and new English content should be chosen from material created by native speakers.Furthermore,upto-date content from the internet should be used to supplement students’ learning and a more systematic approach should be established for the MTI degree.It is necessary to allow students to engage with as much native-level English as possible to grasp the many subtleties of the English language.
