The Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2011 Edition)clearly states that high-grade students in primary school should try to read English stories and other English extracurricular reading materials;students can understand,read and tell simple stories with the help of pictures;students are required to develop a good reading habit.According to the internship experience in a primary school in Shandong Province,the author found that high-graders in primary school lacked interest in English reading and had poor English reading habits.English picture book as an English extracurricular reading material,contains a large number of vivid pictures and simple sentence patterns,so it is a high-quality material suitable for primary school students.In order to find the proper way of teaching English reading for high graders in primary school,the author conducted a 16-week action research on teaching of English picture books.The specific issues in this action research are discussed as follows:(1)What is general attitude of high-graders towards English reading in primary school?(2)Can English picture books stimulate students' interest in English reading? And how can it improve the high-graders' English reading ability? How is the effect?(3)What is the specific teaching path of teaching English picture books reading?The author selected 34 students from the fifth grade of a primary school in Zibo City,Shandong Province as the research object,and conducted picture book reading teaching in action research.This action research is divided into three stages,the first stage was mainly to improve students' English reading interest through picture book teaching.The second stage cultivated students' English reading strategies by adjusting picture book teaching methods and then formed good English reading habits.In the third stage of action research,the author combined the contents of picture books with those of traditional textbooks to improve students' English reading grades.The data collection of this action research are mainly adopted through thecombination of qualitative and quantitative methods.The main sources are questionnaires,interviews,English reading tests,and teaching diaries.The conclusions of this action research are as follows: the two questionnaires meet the requirements of the paired sample t test,and the results show that students' reading attitudes are improved significantly(P<0.05).All dimensions(reading cognition,reading emotion,reading behavior)have also been improved significantly(P<0.05).The two English reading tests meet the requirements of the paired sample t test,which shows that the reading grade of students have been improved significantly(P<0.05).According to successive interviews and classroom observations,students' English reading interest has been improved significantly,and their reading habits have also been improved significantly.Therefore,in the teaching of English reading,picture book reading can not only improve effectively the English reading interest of high-graders in primary school,but also develop good English reading habits,and improve students' English reading ability.The conclusion of this research has certain enlightenment on the English reading teaching of high-graders in primary school.Firstly,teachers need to update the teaching concept of English reading,and incorporate English picture books into daily English teaching,and guide students to read extracurricular material as early as possible.Secondly,it is necessary to introduce the reading strategies to students when picture book teaching is conducted,and students should be guided to establish correct reading habits.The action research has basically achieved the expected goals,but there are also shortcomings such as research is conduct within a short time.Therefore,the effect of English picture books reading teaching for high-graders in primary school needs to be further explored.
