With the introduction and influence of picture books, more and more educators have realized the educational and instructional value of English picture books. They carried out theoretical research and teaching practice one after another. Therefore, the introduction of English picture books into the classroom will be the choice of English teachers. The rational development of English picture books resources will add more charming and humanistic vitality to the English classroom.Based on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory, this study attempts to explore the effectiveness of applying English picture books to English phonetic class.A 16-week teaching experiment was carried out in a primary school in Inner Mongolia.Based on the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, the research conclusions were drawn. This study is an experimental research. In order to test the teaching effect of English picture books in phonetics classes, the research hypotheses are as follows:(1)The application of English picture books in phonetics teaching is more effective to improve students’ phonetics proficiency than traditional phonetics teaching.(2)Applying English picture books teaching phonetics can improve students’ phonetic learning belief in terms of their attitude, motivation and self-concept of phonetic learning. The research subjects are Class 1 and Class 4,two classes with the same total number and the same overall level in a primary school in Inner Mongolia, among which Class 1 was the controlled class and Class 4 was the experimental class. The teacher used English picture books to teach pronunciation in the experimental class, while the controlled class adopted the traditional phonetic teaching method. The research tools include pronunciation proficiency test, pronunciation learning belief questionnaire survey and interview. Before and after the experiment, all the subjects were given two English phonetic proficiency tests, and the students of experimental class were investigated by questionnaire on English phonetic learning belief.Through interviews, the students’ real feelings about learning phonetics by using English picture books were further explored.Based on the data obtained from SPSS 22.0 statistics analysis, this study draws the following conclusions:(1)Compared with the traditional phonetic teaching method, the application of English picture books in phonetic teaching is more effective, especially in phonetic symbols, spelling, stress, sentence reading and oral expression.(2)After 16 weeks of teaching experiments, students’ English phonetic beliefs in experimental class have changed significantly, which can be seen in their attitude, motivation and self-concept of phonetic learning belief. This study expands the scope of English picture book teaching and preliminarily verifies its feasibility in primary school phonetics teaching. What’s more, the author is committed to exploring the ideas and methods of applying English picture book in phonetics teaching, transforming the abstract teaching process into the concrete and operational teaching steps. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide some help for front-line English teachers’ practical teaching.
