A Report On The English Translation Of Chinese Subtitles Of Ergeng’s Original Web Films

In recent years,with the continuous development of the Internet and the film industry,more and more original web-films platforms have emerged.Especially the accelerated implement of China’s "going-out" strategy increases the demand of English translation of web films’ Chinese subtitles.At present,most of the translation tasks are completed by spontaneous fansub groups free of charge while a few of them are entrusted by the web-film companies to translation teams of paid service.Due to the lack of systematic guidance,translation’s quality varies widely.Comparatively speaking,the latter type of translation which have been subject to strict assessment are better in quality and quality subtitle translation facilitates expanding the audience oversea who can further understand the charm of Chinese cultureBased on the English translation practice of Ergeng’s original web films and the core concepts of Eco-translatology,the report analyzes the web films’ macro and micro ecology environments and proposes in retrospect the translator’s strategies of adaptive selection from the framework of three dimensional transformation:language dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension.In the language dimension,according to the differences between Chinese and English,the translator makes the bilingual transformation In the cultural dimension,the translator uses the strategies of annotation or domestication to translate a variety of culture-loaded words between the stative and the dynamic,the personal and the impersonal In the communicative dimension,due to the restriction of time and space in subtitle translation,the translator prefers the strategies of deduction,including condensation,reductive paraphrasing and deletion,and word order adjustmentThe report is divided into five parts.The first part is the description of translation task,comprising its background,characteristics,purpose and process.The second part is literature review from two aspects,studies of Eco-translatology at home and abroad and subtitle translation from the perspective of Eco-translatology.The third part is the theoretical framework of this report,presenting the core concepts of Eco-translatology.Based on the three-dimensional methodology of Eco-translatology,namely,three-dimensional transformation,the forth part analyzes the subtitle translation of the Ergeng’s original web films and proposes the translator’s strategies of adaptive selection.The fifth part summarizes the discoveries and the shortcomings of this report,and expresses the translator’s hope for making a contribution to the English translation of web films’ Chinese subtitles.
