Interpreting,as a thinking-based activity,is closely relevant to logic. As has been pointed out by various studies, logical coherence is an important criterion of interpreting quality and is of great importance to the audience's understanding of the original message.Logically-coherent interpreting usually features 1)clear main ideas and structure;2)correct logical links and a complete chain of reasoning;3)coherence in expression.By contrast, interpreting that lacks logical coherence is characterized by1)vague main ideas and unclear structure;2)incorrect or absent links;3)self-contradictory expressions. This thesis, based on a case study on the English-Chinese interpreting at the mock conference of Joseph Nye's speech at the Oxford Union, points out the typical logical errors in the author's interpreting, analyzes the underlying reasons and provides improved versions that are more logically-coherent.In summary, logical incoherence is mainly attributed to inadequate listening and analysis, inefficient note-taking,non-rigorous wording and insufficient knowledge and training. Therefore, interpreters should focus on those four aspects to tackle the problem of logical incoherence. This thesis provides specific and exercisable suggestions on how interpreters can be more active and analytical with their listening, make their notes more clearly-structured,be more careful with their wording, and improve efficiency in their daily learning and practicing,so as to improve their logical-coherence in interpreting.
