Research On Chinese BL Web Series In The Context Of The New Media

Since the 21 st century,in the context of media convergence,as a form of expression of the BL sub-culture,BL web series has gradually been rising.It has won great social attention,but also caused great social controversy.There are great differences in the characteristics between the BL web series and the traditional dramas and other types of network dramas,which is the result of multiple factors in the context of new media.Therefore,in order to have a clear understanding of the characteristics of the BL web series,it is necessary to place the research in the current context of new media,thorough analyzing the specific work,exploring the characteristics of the BL web series and the tendency of de-BL in its development.Based on existing theories of film and television creation,this paper firstly introduces the research background,current overseas and domestic literature review,researching significance,methodologies and creative ideas,tracing back and defining the concepts of BL and BL series.Also,it compares the differences between BL literature,homosexual literature and fan fiction.Secondly,this paper conducts an analysis of the development history of BL web series,broadcasting channels and the source of its content.30% of BL web series are original works while 70% are adapted from BL fictions.According to different adaptation degree,three characteristics of BL web series adaptation are concluded: being faithful to the original,integrating it all together,and back-door listing.Meanwhile,it is learnt that under the review pressure,BL web series,compared with the original fictions,are presented with a remarkable change in terms of characters and plots.Third,proceeding from the specific work,the features being performed by BL series are explored,mainly from the perspective of the type integration and diversity trend of BL web series,the demonstration of the unique visual symbol---a male's body,and the video's audio-visual style of aestheticism.Afterwards,the “de-BL” tendency and relevant reasons and consequences showed in the development of BL web series are discussed.At last,some suggestions are proposed to standardize BL web series,including the understanding and tolerance of BL subculture from the mainstream social value,assisting the BL target audience to properly understand BL subculture,and how the creation team should conduct a reasonable adaptation of BL fictions under the current review mechanism,so that the audience could truly appreciate excellent BL web series.
