A Report On Interpreting For 2019 Seminar On Agricultural South-South Cooperation For Officials From Developing Countries

"Belt and Road" initiative,since promoted,has witnessed closer communications and cooperation between China and other developing countries.From August 13th 2019 to September 2nd 2019,the "2019 Seminar on Agricultural South-South Cooperation for officials from Developing Countries",hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and organized by the Foreign Economic Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs(FECC),was held.This report analyzes the writer's own performance as the escort interpreter for the seminar.The report is written within the framework of Interpretive Theory.This theory emphasizes understanding the source language,breaking away from the shell of the source language and re-expressing in the target language.Given the features of immediacy and flexibility of escort interpreting,quick understanding and proper separation from the form of source language are demanded.Thus Interpretive Theory is quite relevant to guide this report.Combining theoretical basis and practical cases,this report explores the writer's interpreting performance from the three aspects of comprehension,de-verbalization and re-expression,offering an insight into her application of the Interpretive Theory and the concomitant experience.Moreover,the writer also discusses the non-interpreting side in this program,including throat protection,full preparation for emergencies and interpreter's other role as a coordinator.Through the analysis,it can be concluded that an escort interpreter,in order to improve the ability of comprehension,can strengthen listening practice of English with various accents,predicate and prepare for terminology in advance and constantly learn slang in the English language.To enhance the ability of de-verbalization,discourse logic should be straightened out to find out the speaker's real intention.Meanwhile,expanding knowledge scope and grasping the cultural implications carried by words are also required for an interpreter to achieve effective communication.To increase the ability of re-expression,more attention should be paid to the diction and sentence structure similarities and discrepancies between the two languages so as to convey information to the target audience in a more acceptable mannerThrough this report,the writer hopes to improve interpreting skills by evaluating her own performance and present a more comprehensive approach to interpreting study by analyzing non-interpreting matters.Meanwhile,the writer also hopes that this report can bring inspiration to other escort interpreters in terms of Interpretive Theory application and offer some reference to interpreting teaching.
