With the development of technology, information exchange among countries has become more frequent, and many enterprises are aware of the importance of protecting intellectual property rights.Enterprises began to apply for patents to protect intellectual property rights,so the translation requirements for patent documents also increased.A high-quality translation means a lot to whether a patent application, while domestic teaching and training of patent translation and related guidance theory are relatively scarce. From October 2018 to April 2019,the author was engaged in the translation of patent abstracts in Hebei Lingying Translation Service Co.,Ltd.,and the number of translated words is nearly 300,000.The author selects pharmaceutical patent abstracts as research text, because traditional Chinese medicine is an important part of China's excellent traditional culture, and only by providing high-quality translations can it be better for its better dissemination. This thesis systematically analyzes the lexical and syntactic aspects according to the linguistic features and structural characteristics under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. At lexical level,it is mainly divided into three aspects: TCM names,Chinese herbal medicines and four-character Chinese phrases. At the syntactic level, long sentences and passive sentences are studied.Through research,it can be found that functional equivalence theory has a guiding role in the translation practice of pharmaceutical patent abstract.According to the principle and requirements of functional equivalence, the use of translation strategies such as literal translation, free translation, reorganization, and conversion can ensure the quality of translation and enable the translation to convey the original information more accurately.
