Talk show interpreting is a subcategory of dialogue interpreting, the talk show content is spontaneous and not necessarily logical or consequential, posing challenges to interpreters.Overlapping turns and quickly exchanging turns are distinctive problems interpreters may encounter compared with conference interpreting.Based on the theories of the Effort Model of SI,Problem Triggers and Reformulation Tactics put forward by Gile, and the experimental statistics, this thesis analyzes the reformulation strategies employed by novices and experts when they encounter problems during the simultaneous interpreting of a talk show from five specific scenarios, namely when facing 1)overlapping turns or quickly exchanging turns;2)unknown names or technical terms;3)fast delivery rate plus dense information;4)implicitly expressed ideas;5)loose-logic information. The thesis analyzed the similarities shared by and differences between novice and expert interpreters, and the reasons behind why they chose to use a specific reformulation strategy. The findings show that there is no significant difference between novices and experts when 1)facing overlapping turns or quickly exchanging turns, both of the two groups tended to employ the reformulation strategy of "omitting turns",while the reasons behind this employment showed some differences;2)facing specific names or technical words, both of the two groups tended to employ the strategy of"reproducing the sound".There is a significant difference between novices and experts in areas like 1)reasons behind the employment of a specific reformulation strategy;2)experts have wider domain-specific knowledge than novices do;3)when facing fast delivery coinciding with dense information content, the output rate and the accuracy of the product of experts is higher that of novices, mainly due to experts’ extensive practice and years of experience and a large pool of active words;4)when facing ambiguous ideas, experts tried to explain them as clearly as possible, while novices tried to retain the ambiguity to avoid the misinterpretation.
