A Report On The Translation Of Application Of A Protocol Based On Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) To Manage Unowned Urban Cats On An Australian University Campus

With the acceleration of urbanization,pets keeping,as a way of leisure and emotional sustenance,is increasingly favored by people.But in the meantime,more and more animals are being abandoned,resulting in the proliferation of stray animals in the city,causing a range of problems on ecology and society.The effective management adopted by international communities for unowned urban cats is TNR(Trap-Neuter-Return),which is widely recognized as a humanitarian control method.However,this approach has not been popularized in China,neither has it attracted enough attention.The translation material selected in this paper is an academic article titled Application of a Protocol Based on TrapNeuter-Return(TNR)to Manage Unowned Urban Cats on an Australian University Campus,which details a nine-year TNR program applied on an Australian university campus and reports its outcomes,providing a useful reference for implementing similar programs in other regions and controlling unowned urban cats.Since the selected material belongs to informative text which focuses on rendering the exact content of the original text with accuracy and effectiveness in a manner readily acceptable to the readership,this report takes Newmark's communicative translation theory as the guideline to discuss the difficulties and translation strategies in the translation practice.Communicative translation is oriented towards target language readers,emphasizing the effective transmission of information to produce equivalent effects among target readers as that among source text readers.And this communicative effects could be achieved through the employment of various translation strategies including paraphrasing,addition,collocational translation,conversion,recasting,combination and four-character phrase to solve problems brought by ambiguous words,semantically-complex words and long and complex sentences,making the target version not only loyal to the source text,but also consistent with the conventions of target language,maximizing the effective information delivery in smooth and concise language.Finally,the author summarizes the unsolved problems in the translation practice,and gives some suggestions on the translation practice,hoping to provide some reference for English to Chinese translation of academic discourse.
