Under the guidance of communicative translation, the report translates Chapter Two of Intercultural Studies: New Frontiers into Chinese and summarizes the ways to deal with difficult points on lexical, syntactic and discoursal levels in academic translation.Newmark's communicative translation theory claims that the effect of the translation on target readers should be the same as that of the source text on source readers, and adapts the translation to conventional forms and expressions in the target language.According to his text type theory that divides the text into expressive, informative and vocative types based on functions of language, communicative translation is suitable for the translation of informative and vocative texts. The academic text belongs to the informative text, for the function of which is to transmit information to readers. This translation practice, under the guidance of communicative translation theory, reveals that difficult points on different levels should be handled as follows: on the lexical level, terminologies and proper nouns should be translated exactly as their standard translation.Translation of those without standard translation should be decided from the context based on their theoretical and practical connotation. For polysemy, the best translation depends on the context and conforms to collocation. For nominalization, nouns should be translated into verbs because the nominal style is frequently used in English while the verbal style is frequently used in Chinese. On the syntactic level, passive sentences are usually translated into active forms. However, when the original meaning is derogatory, the passive voice can be retained. The translation of emphatic sentences should ensure the emphatic element stressed in the target text by placing the emphatic part at the end of a sentence, where the semantic focus is in Chinese. On the discoursal level, the translation should faithfully reflect the cohesion, including the use of reference and substitution.Based on cohesion, coherence emphasizes intra-textual and extra-textual unity. It requires a logical and reasonable translation.
