A Report On The C-E Translation Of Academic Papers On Wuyuan Ancient Villages

With the acceleration of urbanization,more and more villages have been incorporated into cities.Even the historical imprint on some ancient villages has disappeared thoroughly.In order to protect and carry forward the architectural culture of ancient villages,as well as to increase the confidence in Chinese culture,great importance should be attached to the academic study and practical exploration of ancient villages layout.The source texts of this translation report are selected from The Analysis on the Layout of Wuyuan Ancient Villages and The Study on Ancient Villages Space Form Based on Space Syntax--Taking Wuyuan Ancient Villages as Examples.The papers study the layout of ancient villages in Wuyuan,including the analysis on natural factors and artificial factors influencing the layout,the characteristics of layout,the functions of various layouts and the protection measures for the overall appearance of the ancient villages.The English translation of the texts will help overseas readers to understand the layout and culture of Wuyuan ancient villages and promote the publicity of Chinese traditional culture.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation,the paper analyzes the C-E translation process of the two academic papers,sorting out the translation difficulties at lexical and syntactic levels,such as proper nouns,culture-loaded words,four-character phrases,long sentences,non-subject sentences,and applying comprehensively the translation strategies to them,such as explanation,extending,simplification,conversion,sentence reconstruction,literal translation,transliteration,and annotation.Finally,the translation can both convey the cultural information accurately and be accord with the expression habits of target language.This process verifies the important guiding significance of semantic translation and communicative translation in the C-E translation of academic papers on Wuyuan ancient villages.At the same time,it is hoped to provide some references for other translators,so as to improve the translation quality of the texts about Chinese ancient villages and contribute to the export of Chinese traditional culture.
