With the popularization of English education in primary schools,more and more teachers find that English picture books have great value in English teaching in primary schools.The main feature of English picture books is the unity of texts.It contains not only vivid and interesting pictures,but also pure English materials.In picture books,pictures and words are equally important,and the cognitive level of primary school students is in line with their psychological characteristics.Through picture books,students’ interest in learning English can be enhanced,and it is helpful to cultivate students’ language sense in the early stage and to teach them in picture books.Secondary school teachers cultivate pupils’ oral English communicative competence and create favorable conditions for them to learn English in the future.The key and difficult point of primary school English teaching is to cultivate students’ ability to learn English and their interest in learning English.This requires teachers to pay attention to and cultivate students’ two abilities at the initial stage of students’ English learning.Therefore,this study is mainly aimed at students in the third and fourth grades of primary school,and also at students in the fifth and sixth grades,but relatively few.However,there are many difficulties in primary school English picture book teaching.Through investigation and interviews,we find that there are the following problems in English picture book teaching:firstly,the lack of class hours and funds;secondly,primary school English picture book teaching focuses on knowledge-based teaching objectives;thirdly,teachers ’teaching process is rigid;fourthly,teachers’ choice of picture books ignores students’ cognitive needs.After discovering the above problems,this paper analyses the causes of these problems and summarizes the following reasons: first,the school does not pay enough attention to English picture books;secondly,teachers are limited by traditional teaching ideas;secondly,teachers lack the ability to use English picture books for English teaching;finally,teachers lack students’ subjective consciousness.Based on the analysis of the reasons,some suggestions areput forward: firstly,schools should pay more attention to primary school English picture books;secondly,teachers should create an atmosphere of autonomous learning and renew the concept of English picture book teaching;thirdly,teachers should improve their teaching ability through lifelong learning;fourthly,change the concept of education and teaching,and fully respect the students’ subjectivity;fifthly,teachers should create an atmosphere of autonomous learning.Gather the strength of all walks of life to raise the attention of English picture book teaching.The purpose of this study is to demodulate the current situation of primary school English teachers’ use of picture books and the existing problems in the process of picture book teaching,so as to provide support and suggestions for primary school English picture book teaching.
