With the increasingly frequent economic and trade exchanges between countries, legal disputes have emerged frequently.Since Britain and America are case law countries,a judgement in Anglo-American countries is more than just the resolution of a legal dispute. It may include or even create specific legal rules. In this regard, the E-C translation of judgements in Anglo-American countries is an important channel to understand Anglo-American law.Based on the E-C translation practice of a judgement about an American musical copyright infringement case, this report tries to offer solutions to typical problems during translation under the guidance of text coherence.Elements of a judgement in Anglo-American countries are closely correlated, and the content and structures thereof are highly coherent, thus leading to a natural decision of which litigants, legal practitioners and law researchers are convinced. However, the phenomenon of text incoherence often occurs during translation,to be more specific:(1)grammatical incoherence, specifically comprising ambiguous reference of pronouns and improper treatment of conjunction relationship;(2)pragmatic incoherence, comprising failure to convey implied meanings and absence of required information omitted intentionally;and(3)stylistic incoherence, including inaccurate translation of specialized words and insufficient awareness about literariness.Under the guidance of text coherence, the following solutions can restore coherence in translation:(1)substitution of nouns for pronouns and addition of conjunctions are effective means of achieving grammatical coherence;(2)explicitation of implied meanings and compensation for the required information omitted intentionally can ensure pragmatic coherence;and(3)stylistic coherence can be achieved by using diction complying with the legal field and by reasonably using rhetoric devices.Solutions above are conducive to enhancing coherence of the translation and improving the translation quality, providing convenience for target readers and legal researchers to study judgements in Anglo-American countries.
