Abstract/Summary:
The translation of university websites has played an essential role in transmitting information and displaying the good image of the universities in China.Investigating the translation process is a continuing concern within the field of translation at home and abroad. The effect of translation directly affects the accuracy of information transmission and the construction of the university image. The issue of the translation validity of introductory texts is the one which has puzzled researchers for many years. However, the related literature is replete with translation theories from a macro perspective.Until recently,no research has been found that surveyed the practical research from a micro-level.This study seeks to remedy the problems by analyzing the translation of the official English website of the University of Jinan(UJN).In the process of translation, there should be major improvements at the lexical, syntactic, textual, and pragmatic levels. This thesis examines the emerging role of Skopos Theory in solving the above problems encountered in the process of translation.Skopos Theory of translation dates back to the 1970 s.According to Skopos Theory, there are three basic principles that must be followed in the process of translation.First, translation is a calculated purposeful act.The purpose of translation determines the translators’ strategy use in the translating process.Translators must consider the purpose of translation and the aesthetic requirements of the target readers. Therefore, drawing on the Skopos principle, this study investigated the different purposes of the website translation of the UJN;Second,by means of the use of coherence principle, this study assessed the translation strategies that were adapted to the target language readers’ cultural cognitive context;Third, based on the fidelity principle, the study explained the close relationship between the source text and the target text. The three principles of Skopos Theory was proven to be well applied to the translation of website profiles, and the corresponding translation strategies had a positive influence on the translation correctness and validity. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, purpose, significance and organization of the research.Chapter Twobegins by giving a brief introduction to the translation studies of introductory texts in Chinese university websites and lays out the existing problems in the translation process.Chapter Three is concerned with the theoretical dimensions of the research, introducing the history and development of Skopos Theory and explaining the three principles of Skopos Theory as well as their use in practice.Chapter Four is the main part of the thesis, conducting a systematic and in-depth analysis of the UJN website translation at the lexical, syntactic, textual and pragmatic levels. At the lexical level,it needs to consider the norms of translation and website editing as well as adding necessary notes for culture-loaded words. At the syntactic level,it needs to think about different sentence structures and the cognitive habits between Chinese and English. At the textual level,it needs to know how to deal with redundant information. At the pragmatic level,it needs to compress wordy sentences and change clauses or sentences to ensure the important points being included.Chapter Five presents the findings of the research.Limitations and recommendations for further research are discussed.
