A Report On The E-C Translation Of Website Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

The source text for this translation project was selected from the Cornell University website in the United States.The main task of the project is to translate the texts of the Website navigation bar,school profile,college major description and application requirements of the top 100 US news ranked universities in the US to provide complete and accurate information for the target customers.Based on the translation guided by Vermeer’s skopos theory,this report analyzes the applicability of theory in translation practice with specific cases,discussed how to use various translation skills to solve the translation difficulties of proper noun,title and long sentence,and on this basis,summarized the issues that need to be paid attention to in the translation process of university websites.The key to the translation project guided by skopos theory falls in realizing the information transmission function of the original text and giving full play to the translator’s subjective initiative.The translator is able to use a variety of translation skills to solve the difficulties in the translation process on the basis of accurate information conveyance according to the purpose of translation.In terms of textual functions,the website of Cornell University mainly has the functions of information navigation and calling,and the skopos theory is very applicable to such texts,which should be faithful to the original text while moderately achieving the emotional appeal.In the translator’s view,based on the differences in cultural background and the diversity of translation purposes,the translator does not need to translate word by word,and can give appropriate play to the translator’s subjective initiative and combine various translation skills to improve the quality of the translated text.Under the guidance of skopos theory,the author mainly adopts such skills as addition and omission,division and combination,and browses domestic websites before translation in order to find the corresponding words in parallel texts,crosses the language differences between English and Chinese,and makes the translation conform to the skopos rule,fidelity and coherence rule,and meets the expression rules of the translated language.
