The source text of the translation under analysis is excerpted from BP Sustainability Report 2019,which mainly covers climate change and energy conversion, security, and BP’s value to society. The author found that the original text contains a large number of long sentences and technical terms,as well as frequent use of first-person pronouns and passive voices.Given the existing problems in the translation of annual reports, such as inconsistency of terms and inaccuracy of translation, the report intends to explore and study the translation of the selected text, focusing on the fidelity, accuracy, fluency, standardization, and professionalism of the translation, aiming to provide some new thoughts on the translation of this type of informative texts. This translation report discusses and solves the problems existing in the translation process from the perspectives of lexical, syntactic, and textual levels with the functional equivalence theory. The author adopts amplification, semantic extension, and conversion of part of speech to reduce the structural differences between English and Chinese and to achieve the equivalence of form and meaning as far as possible. For sentences, the author adopts such translation strategies as syntactic linearity, recasting translation, omission, division, and change of the voices to make long and complex sentences more active. For the text, through cohesion and coherence, the theme of the article is more distinct and the meaning is more coherent.Functional equivalence theory has brought great guidance to this translation practice, translating such texts as annual reports more accurate, smoother, and clearer. It not only improves the readability of the translated text but also better conveys the meaning of the original text.
