Unilever, the world’s largest consumer goods company, has attached great importance to gender equality in all aspects of its business in recent years for expectation of more business opportunities. Therefore, the translation of "Unilever’s Vision and Commitment"coupled with "Priorities for Business Action",two parts of Opportunities for Women,is taken as the data for a project report. The source text introduces Unilever’s policies and practices along with its partnership with enterprises or organizations. When translated into Chinese,it can offer Chinese enterprises the lessons to tackle with gender equality. The project report, based on Reiss’s Text Typology, identifies the original text as an informative text by analyzing its stylistic features, thus requiring an accurate transmission of information in the translated version. On this basis, major difficulties encountered in translation are analyzed.Firstly comes the translation of proper nouns, including names of persons, places, projects, organizations, and technical terms on business management, laws and so on.Secondly, difficulties arise in the translation of polysemants.Thirdly, efforts are made on the translation of long and complex sentences including attributive clauses and sentences with numbers, particular punctuation marks, more than one adverbial element and so on.Then, under the guidance of Skopos theory, the report summarizes corresponding translation strategies in combination with specific examples. It can be seen that transliteration, literal translation and liberal translation are adopted for the translation of these proper nouns and technical terms,phrase-level collocation and sentence-level collocation for the translation of polysemants, and division, inversion and conversion for the translation of long and complex sentences. Finally, the project report concludes the experience obtained in the translation process, further providing reference to the research in relevant fields. |
