| This report is a translation project of English-Chinese translation of the excerpt Chapter 6-8 from the UN report Taking Action: Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering Women.States members of the United Nations made a commitment in the 2000 Millennium Declaration to realize eight goals,which are called the Millennium Development so as to improve gender equality and women empowerment.In today’s world,gender inequality still exists in most countries,which is a comprehensively serious social problem and has not been effectively solved.At present,under the influence of gender mainstreaming,most countries have put the elimination of all forms of discrimination based on gender,the improvement of women’s status and the realization of gender equality on the agenda of development.The source text is a typical informative text.During this translation report,technical terms,category nouns,demonstrative pronouns and adverbial clauses are mainly studied with Peter Newmark’s text typology theory as the guiding theory.Thus,communicative translation and amplification are applied to the translation report to solve translation difficulties.The excerpt chapter 6-8 mainly introduces guarantee women’s property and inheritance rights,reduce gender inequality in employment and increase women’s quantity in political institutions.Composed of six parts,the translation report first introduces the background of the original text,the status quo of gender inequality,the purpose and significance of translating the original text.The second part includes the introduction to the source text,features of the source text and the structures of the translation report.The third part is translation process composed of pre-translation process,translating process and posttranslation process,among which the pre-translation process includes the collection of the background information,Newmark’s text typology theory,translation tools and arrangement for translation plans,the translating process includes translation strategy and translation difficulties and the post-translation process includes proofreading and revision.The fourth chapter is case analysis,including translation of technical terms,translation of specific words,translation of sentence constituents,and translation of adverbial clauses.A comprehensive analysis of the textual characteristics of the original text is made from the perspective of words and sentences,and the translation of technical terms,category nouns,demonstrative pronouns and adverbial clauses of concession and condition are mainly studied in this report.The original text is a typical informative text.With Peter Newmark’s text typology theory as the guiding theory,communicative translation and amplification are adopted to solve translation difficulties.The fifth part is the task reflections,which summarizes inspiration and prospects for future learning and limitations of the report;The last part is conclusion which makes a detailed summary of the translation difficulties and translation strategy applied during the translation process.Through this report,what the author has learned are as follows.Firstly,the translation of technical terms should be concise and accurate,demonstrative pronouns and category nouns should be appropriately used.Moreover,it is necessary to carefully study the translation of the source text and the language style under the proper register so as to convey the information accurately.Secondly,the Chinese translation and publication of such books can benefit the public,awakening the awareness of equality among the public,especially providing the opportunity for female readers to know the status quo of gender equality,and deepening the understanding of gender equality and women empowerment. |
