| This is a translation practice report on Modern Observational Physical Oceanography:Understanding the Global Ocean(Excerpt). The translator chooses the third chapter of the book as the translation material which describes what the ocean looks like.To provide reference for the translation of English for marine science and to disseminate information of the source text, the Skopos Theory is employed as the guiding translation theory from the aspects of lexis, syntax and discourse. The Skopos Theory is of great theoretical guiding significance for the translation of English for marine science. At the lexical level, there are many oceanographic terms and nominal structures in the source text.Under the guidance of the fidelity rule, the translation should not only meet the demands of the preciseness and the technicality of English for marine science, but also follow the principles of Chinese expression. At the syntactic level, the source text contains a large number of passive voice sentences and long sentences.Guided by the three rules of the Skopos Theory, the translator adopts various translation methods flexibly, including linear translation, division and synthesis for maintaining the logicality and scientificity of the source text.At the discourse level, the source text is coherent with a clear internal logic.Under the guidance of the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, the translation will be more fluent and understandable on the basis of accurate and complete expression of the original information.Based on the translation practice, this report is composed of four chapters.Chapter one is the task description, including the introduction of source material, features of the text and the significance of the task.Chapter two presents a brief introduction about the translation procedures, including preparation before translation, translation process, and quality control.Chapter three is the case analysis at the level of lexis, syntax and discourse from the perspective of the Skopos Theory, which plays a significant role in the whole translation practice report.Chapter four presents the summary of the translation practice, including the experience gained from the translation process and the problems to be solved. |
