A Report On Complex English Sentence Translation In The Joy Of Science Guided By Skopos Theory

In English-Chinese translation,the translation of compound sentences is always the focus and difficulty.Compound sentences usually contain more and longer modifiers,juxtapositions or clauses.Its rich content and complex structure often lead to not only the difficulty of understanding,but also the difficulty of expression,thus constituting the difficulty of translation.The “Skopos Theory of Translation” has studied translation from multiple perspectives and experienced various stages,providing a new method for the study of compound sentence translation.This translation practice report is based on the first to fourth chapters of Jim Alkhalili’s book The Joy of Science,which is divided into five parts.With the help of Skopos theory,the translation methods of some compound sentences in the original text are studied from the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The Joy of Science contains a lot of professional knowledge.In the book,the author explains some principles of scientific experiments to the readers from the perspective of scientists,and then combines them with real life,so that science can be used in life.When translating such texts,the translator needs to know relevant professional knowledge in advance,which is also one of the difficulties in this translation report.Through this translation practice,the translator hopes to add some new ideas to the translation of English compound sentences in popular science texts under the guidance of Skopos theory.In addition,the translator also hopes that readers can see the deep meaning of science,so that science can be used for life,and find ways to improve the quality of life in this book.Through the completion of the practice report,the translator hopes to have a deep understanding of Skopos theory,both theoretically and in practical application,and his research results can bring reference value to more scholars in the research of related topics and fields.
