In the era of information, people, especially young people, have fewer effective readings. In order to improve the reading of adolescents for foreign classics, and to deepen their understanding of the significance of foreign works and the culture of that time, there is an urgent need for high-quality Chinese translation of foreign classics. This paper is a translation practice report on Poor Miss Finch(excerpts)written by Wilkie Collins. The author translates chapters 6 to 9 of the novel, totaling about10,000 words. In this novel, recounting Miss Finch's pitiful fate,Collins shows the injustice on the society towards the disabled and women at that time.According to Newmark's classification of text types, the novel belongs to vocative functional text, which is more suitable to employ communicative translation as theoretical guidance. Therefore, the translator translated the selected chapter under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation theory. The novel is narrated from the perspective of a waitress. The novel mainly tells the romantic triangle between Lucilla and the twin brothers. The female lead,Lucilla, lost her mother when she was a child, and she was blind at the age of 1.She left her father, who did not value her, then lived alone and met Oscar, the male character. They fell love in with each other. However,Oscar's appearance was ruined by the treatment, while Lucia was cured of blindness by the doctor introduced by Oscar's brother,Nugent.Afraid that Lucilla could not accept the change,Oscar let his brother, who was already in love with her, marry Lucilla. Finally,Lucia's waitress, the narrator, could not bear to see that a couple of lovers had been torn apart,so she told Lucia the truth and brought Oscar back to her.The plots are captivating and thought-provoking.Under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation theory, the author translates the selected chapters. The translator analyzes the difficulties in the text from both lexical and sentence levels. In order to better demonstrate the understanding of Newmark's communicative translation theory, the translator gives a corresponding number of examples at each level and below each translation technique, and writes this translation report. At the last part of the thesis, the author summarizes translation experience and acknowledgement in this translation report.
