The material of the translation report is selected from American Environmental History.The author is responsible for translating the third chapter and the fourth chapter of the book.The third chapter presents the environment and methods of planting cotton and tobacco,and the fourth chapter narrates social institutions changes owing to the changes of natural environment.This translation text is a social science text which language is often characterized by accuracy and complexity.After the project is completed,the author summarizes key issues in the project from three aspects:vocabulary,syntax and discourse.In terms of vocabulary,the author gathers information from relevant literature,illustrated books and Internet,then ascertains the most suitable translation of the words by conversion,expansion and commendatory and derogatory meanings;for long sentences,the author divides them into two categories,one is passive sentence,the other is attributive clause,trying to analyze the logical structure of the sentence from syntax combined with translation strategies and techniques,in order to pass on the original meaning;in terms of discourse,the author considers the coherence and cohesion in the process of translation so that every sentence and every word serve the discourse,and the author has whole control of the text.Through this translation practice,the author not only obtains a lot of knowledge about environmental history,expands the vocabulary,but also accumulates a lot of translation skills and experience,as well as network search skills,which lays a good foundation for self and future development.At the same time,the author hopes to provide some referential resources for other translators.
