English reading is so important in English language teaching,so more and more attention should be paid to English reading teaching.The purpose of English learning is to cultivate learners’ linguistic competence.Although there are a lot of teaching methods,satisfying results cannot be got.Measures should be taken to cater higher requirements for current existed problems in English reading teaching,so the research of Whole Language Approach in English reading teaching is of great significance.In Whole Language Approach,language is taught as a whole.In this thesis,the author tries to apply this method into real teaching practice.The author hopes to find answers for the following questions and apply Whole Language Approach in English reading teaching class,aiming to offer the students a better English reading learning strategy in the end.(1)What effect does Whole Language Approach have on students’ English reading interest and classroom atmosphere?(2)What influence will Whole Language Approach have on improving students’ reading ability? And in what aspects can Whole Language Approach improve senior high school students’ reading ability?To conduct the study,research subjects are selected from the first grade of senior high school students(class 1 and class 2)from Zhongmu No.2 Senior High School.Class 1,the experimental class,adopts Whole Language Approach in English reading teaching.Class 2,the controlled class,adopts traditional method in English reading teaching.The experiment lasts for four months.Questionnaires,tests,and other research instruments are employed to achieve the effectiveness of the application of Whole Language Approach to English reading teaching in senior high school.After four months experimental research,the author draws the following conclusions.Firstly,Whole Language Approach can improve students’ interest,which is conducive to arousing their enthusiasm and initiative.Secondly,Whole Language Approach can create a better classroom atmosphere.Consequently,better teaching effects can be achieved in such a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere.Thirdly,Whole Language Approach is beneficial to improving students’ reading ability,especially in aspects of the main purpose questions and speculative judgment questions.Based on the research,the purpose of the research is to guide students to read more effectively,which is conducive to improving teaching quality of English reading.There are six chapters in this thesis,and the main contents of the first chapter are: the research background,research significance,research questions,research methods and structure of the thesis.Chapter two is concerned with literature review.In this chapter,the author states the previous studies of Whole Language Approach.Chapter three is the framework of Whole Language Approach,which contains the definition,the theoretical basis,the purpose and contents and the general principles of Whole Language Approach.And chapter four of the thesis is research design.Chapter five is data analysis and discussion.Chapter six includes major findings,limitations and further suggestions.
