English reading is one of the most important skill for language learners.And English reading teaching is important and difficult for senior high school English teachers.However,teachers tend to pass on knowledge to students,rather than develop student’s ability.The purpose of this study was to investigate what effects POA had on senior high school students’ cognitive ability.Based on Input & Output theory and POA(product-oriented approach),designed the English reading teaching process.Cognitive ability includes identifying and extracting,summarizing and analyzing,criticizing and assessing.This study aimed to answer the following two questions:(1)Does the product-oriented approach have an impact on the three dimensions of English reading cognitive ability of senior high school students: identification extraction,summary analysis,critical evaluation? If so,how do they affect each other?(2)What is the effect of productive-oriented approach on English reading cognitive ability of senior high school students at different levels? The subject were 100 senior school students of local senior high school,who were selected from two classes.The experiment lasted 16 weeks,with1pre-test,1 post-test and 4 test conducted in the middle of the experiment.The results shows that POA did enhance the senior high school students’ reading cognitive ability.(1)POA exerted effect on three dimensions of English reading cognitive ability.(2)Findings of the study indicated that,in high proficiency group,POA hadn’t significant effect on their identifying and extracting,criticizing and assessing.But POA had significantly increased their summarizing and analyzing.In middle proficiency group,POA had different effect on three dimensions of English reading cognitive ability,summarizing and analyzing came first,followed by identifying and extracting,criticizing and assessing.In low proficiency group,POA had the significant increase in all dimensions: summarizing and analyzing,identifying and extracting,criticizing and assessing.The results showed that applying POA to English reading is an effective method for senior high school students,especially for the lower proficiency students.
