This translation report is based on Learning to Dance,written by Elizabeth Jolley.Elizabeth Jolly is an Australian famous female writer with an international reputation.She published 15 full-length novels,4 short stories and some scattered works,and many of her works won the literary awards.The translator selected the two stories At the River and The Pelican as the original text.The two stories separately describe the trivialities of Isobel’s family at the river,and the strange missing of Molly’s daughter Cynthia when she watched the magical Pelican.The stories reflect the tragic life experience and the miserable inner world of the marginalists.There are many sentences in the original text coordinated with “and”.If “and” is simply translated into “和”,the translated text will be illogical and incoherent in meaning.There are also many dialogues in the original text.Owing to omission and abstract words in dialogues,they are difficult to translate.In order to solve the above difficulties in translation,the translator took Relevance Theory as theoretical foundation and used omission,restructuring,choice of word meaning,semantic extension,and amplification methods to solve problems.The translator hope this translation report can provide useful reference for the translation of similar texts.
