The Chinese Translation Of Fictional Dialogues In Come Sundown From The Perspective Of Contextual Adaptation

The source material of this thesis is selected from the novel named Come Sundown of the famous American writer Nora Roberts.The novel gives a detailed portrait of the story of Bodine family in Western Montana,who run the Bodine Resort.There are a lot of character dialogues in this novel,and many different kinds of characters are created.Background and scene are changing constantly in the dialogue among different characters.Therefore,with regard to the understanding and grasp of the context,the translator is supposed to be very cautious,otherwise it will be led to misreading of this work.Based on Jef Verschueren's classification of context and the characteristics of fictional dialogue,this thesis intends to make an analysis of fictional dialogue translation from the perspective of communicative context and linguistic context of the Contextual Adaptation Theory.Firstly,the features and functions of the fictional dialogue in the novel Come Sundown are analyzed from the communicative context and the linguistic context.Secondly,according to the features of the dialogue in the novel,two principles in translation are followed on the basis of contextual adaptation theory--the loyalty principle and the coherence principle.Then from the perspective of linguistic context,this thesis analyzes the fictional dialogues of the novel from three dimensions including vocabulary,syntax and discourse,and from the perspective of communicative context,it analyzes the dialogues translation in psychological world,social world and physical world.Finally,this paper summarizes the translation methods in the translation practice of fictional dialogue,and concludes its translation strategies.In order to achieve contextual adaptation in the target text,different translation techniques should be adopted in the process of translation.Firstly,under the guidance of the principle of coherence and on the basis of linguistic context,the translator adopts word conversion method on lexical level,reversing method on syntactic level,and omission method on discourse level.Secondly,under the guidance of the principle of loyalty and on the basis of communicative context,the translator adopts amplification in psychological world,splitting in social world,and transference in physical world.Finally,this thesis concludes that the translation of foreign literary works,especially the dialogue translation,translators should not only correctly analyze the source language context,but also reconstruct the context in the way that the target reader can understand it.By discussing the translation of fictional dialogues in the novel Come Sundown,the translator hopes to provide some references for the translation of fictional dialogues in other literary works.
