| This report is based on the translation of chapter 3 “It’s Your Call---Kids as Decision Makers”,selected from the book The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives, which is written by Ned Johnson,an educator and William Stixrud PhD,a clinical neuropsychologist.Based on the development of psychology, neuroscience and brain science, the book is a parenting guide that provides a scientific perspective on how to raise self-driven children. The selected chapter begins to introduce the methods of having children act as decision-makers.This translation project is aimed at making Chinese readers know about the scientific advice and methods given by western educators and psychologists on parenting, and raise children in more proper ways. There are some neurological terms and rhetorical devices in the source text which add difficulty to the translation.According to text types and communicative translation theory, the translator solves translation difficulties mainly by adopting literal translation, free translation, division, restructuring and other translation methods,so as to retain the style of the source text to the greatest extent, hoping that the readers of the translated text can have similar reading experience with the original readers. In the report, the translator provides a large number of translation examples in order to provide reference for the future translation study of such texts. |
