The report is based on the translation of the eighth chapter of Why Travel?Understanding Our Needs To Move And How It Shapes Our Lives, written by Matthew Niblett and Kris Beuret. It mainly describes the historical origin and development of travel activities,as well as the mutual influence of travel on the development of human literature and various art forms. This report aims to help Chinese readers gain a better understanding of tourism culture in Western culture. The source text contains many allusions and names of ancient people and places, and many long and difficult sentences.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translator translate allusions by means of adding notes, and deals with long and difficult sentences by means of translation techniques such as conversion and restructuring. The aim is to produce a target text that is more fluent and readable for the target readers. It also attempts to provide inspiration for English-Chinese translation involving social and cultural topics.
