We know that American education is very advanced and therefore the best-selling books on American education are warmly welcomed by Chinese parents.The present report is written as the result of translating The New York Times bestseller YOU,YOUR CHILD AND SCHOOL,which is the latest book of the noted writer and educator Sir Ken Robinson.In the book,the author focuses on the education and growth of children from the perspective of parents,analyzes the problems in the current education system and the challenges parents and children face.Then he points out that parents can play a greater role in their children’s education,and provides parents with scientific and practical advice.According to Peter Newmark’s categories of text types,the source text here belongs to the vocative text type.Therefore in the process of translation,we mainly adopt Newmark’s communicative translation theory,laying emphasis on the feelings of the target language readers.By using specific translation strategies,such as “extension of word meaning”,“omission and amplification”,“domestication”,and “division,combination and shifting”,we try our best to make the translation idiomatic while remaining faithful to the original work.Through the practice of translation,we explore the significance of “communicative translation” in translating of education bestsellers.The report is divided into four chapters.The first one is the task description,which introduces the original author and his work,analyzes the type of the source text,and explains what semantic and communicative translation are.The second chapter is the task procedure,which includes preparation,translation and proof reading.The third,the case study,is the main body of the report.In this part,we illustrate how to translate the education bestseller from the perspective of communicative translation by using the specific translation strategies.The fourth chapter is the summary,which includes the conclusions and lessons drawn from this translation practice,as well as the reflections in the process.The inadequacies of this translation are also pointed out in this part.
