The source text of this translation report was a grand jury indictment selected from Basic Criminal Law which was written by famous American jurist Anniken U.Davenport.This translation report based on the translation practice of this grand jury indictment, showed the significance of the translation task, analyzed the linguistic features of the source text, and summarized typical difficulties in the translation of the text—the translation of subordinate clauses.Due to the lack of using subordinate clauses in Chinese language, subordinate clauses in this source text, namely the object clauses, attributive clauses and adverbial clauses, caused many difficulties in translation.Guided by the Skopos theory put forward by Hans J.Vermeer, this translation report discussed the translation skills for these three typical translation difficulties one after another, which were shift, division and combination. This translation report stated the lessons and experiences of translation practice and described how the author applied the theory to solve typical difficulties in the translation practice. The conclusion might be used as a reference for other translators in legal translation.
